The rock and roll legend Chuck Berry has died at the age of 90, police in the US state of Missouri have said.

“The St. Charles County Police Department sadly confirms the death of Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr., better known as legendary musician Chuck Berry,” it said on Facebook.

“The family requests privacy during this time of bereavement.”

Berry’s first hit single, Maybellene, charted in 1955, and is described as one of the first rock and roll songs.

Other songs included Johnny B. Goode, Roll Over Beethoven and Rock and Roll Music.

Scores of modern-day musicians were influenced by Berry, including the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards.
