NBC News says longtime Today show host Matt Lauer has been fired for “inappropriate sexual behaviour.”
Lauer’s co-host, Savannah Guthrie, made the announcement at the top of Wednesday’s show, and NBC released a memo confirming its decision.
“On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behaviour in the workplace by Matt Lauer,” it reads.
“It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards,” the memo adds.
“As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment.”
NBC’s move comes a week after CBS News fired morning anchor Charlie Rose amid similar reports of sexual misconduct in the work place.
“While it was the first complaint lodged against Lauer,” the memo to staff said, “we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”
Lauer hosted Today for nearly two decades, and made it a highly lucrative ratings leader second only to ABC’s Good Morning America.
“We are deeply saddened by this turn of events,” NBC said.
“But we will face it together as a news organisation – and do it in as transparent a manner as we can.”
On Twitter, President Donald Trump expressed surprise but added: “When will the top executives at NBC & Comcast be fired for putting out so much Fake News.”
Sky News has reached out to Matt Lauer for comment.
