A nurse who was re-arrested by police investigating the deaths of several babies at a hospital in Cheshire has been bailed.
Lucy Letby, originally from Hereford, was detained on Monday on suspicion of murdering eight infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital’s neonatal unit and attempting to murder six others.
The 29-year-old was also arrested in connection with the attempted murder of three more babies.
Earlier this week, officers searched her home in the Blacon area of Chester.
Police began their investigation in May 2017 and are currently looking into the deaths of 17 babies and 16 non-fatal collapses between March 2015 and July 2016.
Detective Inspector Paul Hughes, who is leading the inquiry has said “due to the nature of this investigation” – it is “extremely challenging”.
“There are no set timescales for this and we would ask people to bear with us whilst we continue with our inquiries.
“I want to reassure people that we are doing everything we can, as quickly as we can, to identify what has led to these baby deaths and collapses.
“We fully appreciate that it continues to have a big impact on all of the families involved and staff and patients at the hospital, as well as members of the public.
“All of the babies’ parents have been updated and are being supported throughout the process by specially trained officers.”
